My arms are feeling sore now... But I am feeling kinda happy... Yeah, that my arms are sore... It's been a long while since I had that unpleasant ache. But I wonder if my enthusiasm will last. In a way, I have to make it last because it doesn't come at a really cheap price. Are you still wondering why my arms are sore? Hee... It's because I am now a gym member of Planet Fitness!
At first, it started as a question in my mind from some time back. Then I became more curious about it. And it doesn't help that I have a friend who is quite enthusiastic about going to gym. So after a few weeks of consideration and deliberation and pondering, I told my friend that I want to go for a trial session.
And there I was with my friend, for the first time in such a long time, entering the dreaded place called GYM. Somehow, the place seems quite nice. A little awesome too. Imagine an open pool on the 5th floor smack in the middle of CBD. You could actually get a thrilling view of the Parliament House, Suntec and Singapore Flyer from sunbathing at the poolside. Cool right?
Anyway, so I donned on my attire and my friend told me to try cycling with him. It's his favourite gym activity it seems. Bam! After 5 minutes, my windpipes became narrow, I started wheezing and I felt like stopping. My concerned friend kept asking if I was okay. I decided to persevere on and overcome it mentally. For a total of 15 minutes, we cycled - me at a slower pace. I regulated my breathing and felt better.
We took a 10 minutes break and we went for round two of cycling. Didn't I mention that cycling is my friend's favourite gym activity... This time, I cycled for a continuous 15 mins non-stop and I tried to maintain my pace. The wheezing came back but I managed to regulate my breathing more easily this time.
And that was my first visit. Now back to my sore arms.
This morning, I decided to try out a gym class session. The naive me thinking that it'll probably be manageable. At most, panting or sweating. But boy was I so wrong! The class was called Body Conditioning. And I felt so conditioned after the class, just like a towel that has been wringed dry in a washing machine. We bent knees, swing arms with dumbells attached, did bench presses and what topped it off was the last item. We each had our own heightened boards and we were asked to lie down on it at a certain position and raise our legs using our 'butts'! Yeah boy, you read it right. Using our 'butts'!
I can't describe it clearly enough but at the end of the class, all I felt like doing was crashing into the board and lie down forever. I have never worked out so hard before. Not even in NS! And here I was, paying good money to be tortured. When my friend said that the torture will come later, I didn't plan on it coming so soon.
But no matter what, I enjoyed both gym days and I think I will do my best to keep it a habit. As they said, motivation will get you started but it is habit that will keep you going. Maybe, just maybe, I could slim down in the process. For now though, I just want to keep myself healthy.
